Who am I when I am not "achieving?"

Every day, I catch myself measuring my worth by what I accomplish.
I take quiet note of the things I’ve done and the tasks completed, goals met, small wins that make me feel like I’m moving forward. And when those things are there, I feel… okay. Like I’m doing enough. Like I am enough.
But then there are days when the list is empty. Days when I haven’t achieved much. When nothing is moving. When there’s no visible progress, no applause, no sense of momentum. And in those moments, I’m left with a question I don’t always know how to answer:
Who am I when I’m not achieving anything?
That question has been sitting with me more than I expected; especially in this season of my life. And if I’m honest, it’s uncomfortable. Because it forces me to look beyond what I do… and face what I believe about who I am.
The Trap I Keep Falling Into
It’s so easy for me to tie my worth to my productivity.
The world around me celebrates being busy, being successful, always doing something. And without even realising it, I’ve absorbed that way of thinking. I start to believe that if I’m not producing something, progress, results, movement - then I’m somehow falling behind. Sometimes that even creeps into my relationship with God.
I find myself thinking that I need to be doing more. Praying more. Serving more. Becoming more. As if my worth in His eyes is connected to how much I can offer. And when I’m not doing those things well, or consistently, I feel it. A quiet kind of guilt. Like I’m not enough-not as a person, and not in my faith. Rest becomes difficult because when I slow down, there’s nothing to hide behind. No achievements to point to, Just me… and whatever I believe about myself in that stillness. Which is not very nice to sit in.
What I’m Learning God Says About Me
In this season, I keep coming back to what God says—because if I’m honest, my own thoughts about myself aren’t always kind, and they’re not always true. And slowly, I’m starting to see that my identity was never meant to come from what I do. It was always meant to come from Him.
I’m learning that I am His child-not because I’ve earned it, but because He calls me that. That I am created in His image, which means my value is already there, before I prove anything. That I am chosen and accepted, even in the seasons where I feel unsure, unproductive, or unseen.
Living This Out (Imperfectly)
I won’t pretend I’ve figured this out. Some days, I still feel the pull to measure myself by what I’ve done. I still have moments where I feel behind, or like I should be more by now but I’m trying-slowly-to live differently. I’m trying to rest without immediately feeling guilty. To let a quiet day be just that… a quiet day, not a wasted one.
I’m trying to remind myself, gently, that my worth hasn’t disappeared just because my productivity has. I’m learning to speak to myself with a bit more truth, especially on the days where I feel like I’m not enough. To say, even if I don’t fully feel it yet: I am still loved. I am still chosen. Nothing about that has changed. And I’m trying to build a life - and relationships, that see me as more than what I produce.
A Different Way to See It
There’s a story I keep thinking about-the one where Mary sits at Jesus’ feet while Martha is busy doing everything. If I’m honest, I’ve always felt more like Martha. Wanting to be useful. Wanting to get things right. Wanting to do enough. But Jesus didn’t praise the busyness. He noticed the presence. And I think I’m starting to understand why.
Where I Am Right Now
I don’t have a neat conclusion for this. I’m still in the process of unlearning the idea that I have to earn my worth. Still figuring out what it looks like to live from who I am in Christ, instead of constantly trying to prove it.
But I do know this:
When everything else feels uncertain, when progress is slow, or invisible, or completely absent; what God says about me hasn’t changed.
And for now, that’s enough to hold onto.
All my love
