“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” - 2 Corinthians 5:7

One of the greatest struggles in the Christian life is learning the difference between the reality of Christianity and our experience of Christianity. Many believers unknowingly judge God's faithfulness by what they feel, see, or experience in a particular season. When life is good, God feels close. When life is difficult, God seems distant. But Scripture repeatedly teaches us that God's reality is not determined by our experience.

The reality of Christianity is grounded in what God has already accomplished through Jesus Christ. The experience of Christianity is how we perceive and live out that reality in our daily lives. The two are connected, but they are not always identical.

The Reality

The reality of the Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, rose again, and reconciled us to God. Whether we feel saved or not, God's Word declares that those who have placed their faith in Christ are forgiven, adopted, and made new.

The reality is that God is present.

The reality is that God is good.

The reality is that God is working all things together for our good.

The reality is that we are loved with an everlasting love.

These truths do not change based on our emotions, circumstances, or understanding.

Think about the disciples in the storm. Jesus was physically in the boat with them, yet they experienced fear, panic, and uncertainty. Their experience told them they were about to perish. The reality was that the Son of God was with them the entire time. The storm was real, but so was His presence.

How often are we the same?

We face financial pressure, disappointment, unanswered prayers, relationship struggles, or seasons of spiritual dryness. Our experience tells us that God has forgotten us. Yet the reality remains unchanged: God is still on the throne.

The Experience

Our experience of Christianity is often shaped by our maturity, circumstances, expectations, and emotions. Some days we feel full of faith and confidence. Other days we feel weak and discouraged.

Many Christians mistakenly believe that a strong relationship with God means constantly feeling His presence. Yet some of the greatest men and women of faith walked through seasons where God seemed silent.

The Psalms are filled with cries such as, "Where are You, Lord?" Yet those same writers continued to trust Him even when their experience did not match what they knew to be true.

Faith is not pretending everything is fine. Faith is choosing to believe God's reality above our temporary experience.

When Experience Contradicts Reality

There will be moments when your experience appears to contradict what God has promised.

You may feel alone, but God says He will never leave nor forsake you.

You may feel defeated, but God says you are more than a conqueror through Christ.

You may feel unworthy, but God calls you His child.

You may feel forgotten, but God says He has engraved you on the palms of His hands.

The Christian life is not about denying our feelings; it is about refusing to let our feelings become our foundation. Feelings are real, but they are not always reliable. God's Word remains the ultimate truth.

Living from Reality

Mature faith develops when we learn to live from God's reality rather than react to our experience.

When circumstances are difficult, we remind ourselves of what is true.

When emotions fluctuate, we anchor ourselves in Scripture.

When prayers seem unanswered, we continue trusting God's character.

This is what it means to walk by faith and not by sight.

The goal of Christianity is not simply to have spiritual experiences, although those moments are precious. The goal is to know Christ so deeply that even when the experience changes, our confidence in Him remains steady.

Final Thought

The reality of Christianity is that Jesus is Lord, God is faithful, and His promises are true. The experience of Christianity may include joy, sorrow, victories, struggles, certainty, and questions. But when experience and reality seem to clash, believers are called to stand on God's truth rather than their emotions.

Because at the end of the day, Christianity is not built on how we feel. It is built on who Christ is.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” - Matthew 24:35
