The best comes from within

Today, I woke up and completed a 4km run in under 40 minutes. For many, that might not sound impressive, but for me, it’s a significant achievement. Just two years ago, I could barely finish a 2.5km walk in the same time. This transformation made me ponder the relationship between effort and reward. The amount of effort you invest in any endeavor ultimately influences the outcomes you’ll achieve down the road. Yet, as I reflect on my journey, I am reminded that it actually is not that simple. So many other factors have influence in this realtionship.
Understanding Real Effort
It’s easy to equate effort with excellence. However, there are days when we can only give our average or even below-average to our pursuits. Does this mean our results will be weak because of our emotional state or circumstances? Probably. It can feel unjust at times where effort and outcome don’t seem to line up. Life can often be a roller coaster of varying performance levels influenced by our mood or energy levels.
Yet, this realization brings forward an important truth: it’s not all about the effort we put in. While effort is crucial, the results are sometimes beyond our control.

Shifting Perspectives: Running with God
In this journey of understanding effort, I’m grateful for the presence of God in my life. God offers a different perspective when it comes to our efforts and the rewards that follow. It reminds me of the biblical story of Peter and the disciples, who toiled through the night on their fishing boats but returned empty-handed. It was only when Jesus arrived and instructed them to cast their nets again on the other side, that they experienced an overwhelming catch.
This teaches us several valuable lessons:
Obedience Matters: Following God’s guidance can lead to miraculous outcomes when our efforts seem futile.
No Performance Comparison: We often fall into the trap of comparing our achievements with others. When we run our own race with God, we’re reminded that our journey is unique, and we should march to the beat of our own drum.
The Heart of the Marathon
As my friends who run marathons often say, the competition is not against others but against oneself. Training involves consistency and dedication to personal bests rather than comparing with fellow runners. In the same way, life can feel like a marathon, not a sprint, and understanding this can bring a sense of peace and clarity.
Imagine being on that long stretch of pavement, your breath steady, feet rhythmically pounding the ground. The focus shifts away from who’s speeding past you and turns inwards - concentrating solely on your training and progress.
When we set our sights on personal growth and development with God by our side, we create an atmosphere ripe for rewards that may come in unseen ways.
Embracing God's Timing
Part of running with God means understanding that He works in His timing, which is often different from our expectations. We can exert effort, train hard, and visualize our goals, but the rewards may not always appear when we think they should.
Consider this: the fruits of your labor may not manifest right away. Yet the journey, the lessons learned, the perseverance developed - those elements are profound and can be seen as divine rewards in themselves.
Keep Striving Forward
This week, as you continue to put your best foot forward, remember that God walks alongside you. Every step you take is valuable, even when you don’t see immediate results. Embrace the confusion, the challenges, and the days where your effort doesn’t seem to pay off.
Trust in God’s plan for you and lean into the journey.
Strive toward your goals, but also allow yourself grace on days where you feel less than your best.
Reaffirm your commitment to giving your best each time, for you’re not just running for accolades or recognition but for personal growth and a deeper relationship with God.
Let us not forget that the heart of our efforts is not solely in the result but in the experience, endeavor, and faith we cultivate along the way. Whether you're running, working, or engaging in any aspect of life, remember to invite God into every step and value the uniqueness of your personal journey.
Your Race Is Unique
To wrap up, let’s take a quick look at our lives. Each one of us is destined for different paths, and it’s vital to grasp that life isn’t a competition against our neighbors. As we invest effort into our journeys, let’s do so with the understanding that God’s hand can turn our ordinary efforts into extraordinary rewards.
Your growth may not look like anyone else's, and that’s okay. You are beautifully designed for your own unique journey, and God's involvement in your life will produce results beyond your comprehension.
So lace up your running shoes and keep striving towards the mark. Every effort, big or small, contributes to a beautiful story written by God’s hand.
All my love,
Zola x
