It's not convetional, but it works

Stepping Into the Unknown
Doing something new sometimes requires us to do it in a way it has never been done before. That sentence alone can be unsettling - especially for someone like me, who loves structure, predictability, and a clear plan. There’s comfort in knowing what comes next. There’s safety in routine. And yet, here I am: standing in the unknown, with an unknown future stretching out in front of me.
A New Playground With No Rules
If I’m honest, this season feels like a whole new playground. One without rules clearly written on the wall, or instructions neatly laid out. At first, that was terrifying. But in a surprisingly short space of time, I’ve already learnt so much about myself. About my limits. About my courage. About the quiet strength that only seems to appear when there’s no other option but to move forward.
Remembering We Live in Community
Living this way has reminded me of something important: as much as we are each living our own lives, we are also surrounded by people who are just trying to make it through their own days. We don’t exist in isolation. We exist in community. And that means we have to keep holding space for one another, even when our own lives feel fragile or uncertain.
“Thank You, God” and “Please Help Me, God”
This past week has been filled with moments of, “Thank you, God,” quickly followed by, “Oh no… please help me, God.” And honestly? That feels like real life. Life is messy and unpredictable. It rarely moves in straight lines. Yet, in the middle of all that chaos, God remains constant. Yoh! What a gift. When everything around us shifts, changes, or falls apart, He does not.
The God Who Pursues Consistently
That truth has been grounding for me. Especially on Thursday night, when I had the privilege of listening to a talk about how God pursues us consistently. Not half-heartedly. Not only when it’s convenient. But fully, intentionally, relentlessly. It made me pause and ask myself: when last did I pursue someone - or something - with that same consistency?
Created for Community, Not Isolation
So much of life is spent focused on our own individuality. Our goals. Our healing. Our journeys. And while those things matter, we were never meant to do life alone. We were created for community. For connection. For love that costs us something.
The Risk and Reward of Unconditional Love
I like to think of myself as someone who loves unconditionally. But unconditional love isn’t neat or predictable. It’s risky. It affects both the giver and the receiver in very real ways. Loving deeply means opening yourself up to disappointment, misunderstanding, and sometimes loss. Yet, I still believe it’s worth it.
I can only hope that the people who have experienced my version of loving them felt fully seen and valued - even if things didn’t end positively. Everyone deserves the privilege of being loved in the way that speaks to them. Not perfectly, but sincerely.
John the Baptist: An Unconventional Life
When I think about living life unconventionally, I’m reminded of John the Baptist in the Bible. He didn’t follow the expected path. He went out into the wild, away from comfort and familiarity, proclaiming the coming of Jesus. His life didn’t make sense by worldly standards - but it was fueled by love and purpose.
It’s Not Conventional, But It Works
And maybe that’s the point.
Maybe living unconventionally isn’t about rejecting structure altogether, but about being brave enough to follow love when it leads us off the well-trodden path. About trusting God in the unknown. About showing up for people, even when it’s uncomfortable. About choosing love - again and again - because it works.
It’s not conventional.
But it works. x

Love this and that we get to hold space for each other
