Dreaming with God - Carrying Heavy Dreams...

I’ve been really intentional over the past month about sitting with God and reading His Word daily. What came from this was a clarity that has been quietly gnawing at me over the past week. Yes, I am a believer, and I know that God can do exceedingly above and beyond what I can think or even imagine (Ephesians 3:20). But I am also human; someone who carries dreams that feel too big and too heavy for me to hold, no matter how strong I may present myself.
So what do I do with them?
Dreaming can feel hard. Heavy, even. It’s almost as though we stop ourselves from dreaming “exceedingly above and beyond,” because deep down we know it’s not something we can accomplish on our own.
Carrying Your Dream
If you believe in God, then the question is not if it will happen, but rather when it will happen. Those are two very different mindsets, and they shift how you see your life.
Lately, I’ve been asking myself: what can I do while I am waiting? Carrying a dream can feel heavy, especially when it feels bigger than your own ability. But when I realise that I was never meant to carry a dream without including God in the process, it starts to feel more attainable, less overwhelming. God loves being involved in our everyday lives. He is a present Father, like no other. And when it starts to feel overwhelming, I’m reminded that maybe I’m not leaning into His strength the way I should be. Trying to accomplish anything in my own power, no matter how big or small, quickly turns into endless striving. And that’s not what moves God.
He responds to humility. To weakness. To dependence.
God desires inclusion. He cares about my dreams just as much as I do.
Admit It to Yourself
I’m learning to see dreaming with God as an invitation, to sit with Him, to be honest with Him, and to be honest with myself. To say what’s actually in my heart. To name it.
Because when I say something out loud, it becomes more real. It begins to take shape. It becomes something I can slowly start to move towards, even in small ways.
And God meets me there.
He is the one who placed the dream in my heart, so who better to bring it to?
I think about when God told Habakkuk to write the vision down (Habakkuk 2:2). There is something powerful about putting it into words. I’ve realised that if I don’t write something down, I’ll probably never do it.
There is power in small steps. In quiet obedience. In doing what I can with what I have.
Holding On and Wrestling
It’s easy to think that seeing your dreams come to life is all about grit, determination, and hard work. And in some ways, that makes it feel like the responsibility rests entirely on you.
That pressure can make the dream feel even heavier.
But time and time again, Scripture reminds me that this isn’t how it works.
I think about David - anointed, yet still running. Chosen, yet still hidden. Fleeing from Saul, who wanted him gone out of jealousy.
I can only imagine how confusing that must have felt. To carry a promise, while also carrying a struggle that didn’t seem to make sense. Sometimes it feels like I’m fighting battles that have nothing to do with me. And that only adds to the weight. It’s easy to think that we move forward by force and effort, but that’s not how God designed us to live. And it’s just as easy to want to give up when we don’t see progress. But then… the desire doesn’t leave.
So I find myself in that tension; wanting to keep going, but also wanting to let go.
I keep moving between those two spaces. Pushing forward, then pulling back. Trying to act, then trying to surrender. And if I’m honest, I don’t always know which one is right.
Looking at It Differently
I’ve had to unlearn a lot to see even small progress in my life. And it hasn’t been easy.
But I’m grateful that, by His grace, there is always room for change. For growth. For becoming. I keep coming back to Proverbs 16:3:
“Commit your ways to the Lord, and He will establish your plans.”
That is a promise I can stand on. Not success as the world defines it,but something deeper. Something anchored in Christ. We were never meant to carry our dreams alone. God invites us to bring them to Him, to commit them to Him, and to trust that He will establish them in His way and in His time. It may not look exactly how I imagined. But I’m learning to trust that if it aligns with His will, He will shape it in the way it needs to be.
As Psalm 37:4 reminds me, when I delight myself in Him, He aligns my heart with His-and from there, even my desires begin to change.
Where I’m Landing
I’m starting to see that when I pursue my relationship with God more than I pursue my dreams, something shifts. I’m no longer trying to force things in my own strength.
Instead, I begin to see those dreams unfold through Him. It’s slow. It’s uncomfortable at times. Sitting in uncertainty isn’t easy. But maybe that’s part of it. A kind of quiet testing. A refining.
Something I don’t have to go through alone-but with Him, in Him, and for Him.
And somehow, that makes the weight feel lighter.
A Gentle Invitation
This week, I’m choosing to sit with God again and to dream with Him. Not in a rushed or pressured way.Just honestly. Because He is not distant from the things I carry. He is the One who placed them there.
And maybe… He is the One who will show me what to do with them.
Lots of love
